The dilution behaviour of 2( R , S )‐α‐hydroxyethyl‐2‐desvinylpyromethylphaeophorbide a ( 1 ), observed by 1 H n.m.r. spectroscopy, leads to the conclusion that the doubling of many of the lines in the spectra of 1 at high concentrations in CDCl 3 arises from intermolecular diastereoisomerism caused by aggregate formation.
