CIDNP has been found for the methylene protons in Ph 3 CR (R = C 6 H 5 CH 2 ) from the reaction of RHg with Ph 3 CX. A weak CIDNP effect was observed in the product (CH 3 O) 2 C 6 H 3 CPh 3 of alkylation of veratrol by Ph 3 CCl (an aromatic S E substitution) and in the Meisenheimer complex resulting from the reaction of (CH 3 COCH 2 ) 2 Hg with trinitrobenzene in DMSO in the presence of iodide ions (an aromatic S N substitution).
