Anisotropic ESR spectra (THF, frozen glass, 77 K) of PhCN 2 Se 2 ˙ provide valuable information about the electronic structure of the diselenadiazolyl radical. Reaction of PhCN 2 Se 2 ˙ with Pt(PPh 3 ) 3 in CH 2 Cl 2 yielded the first diselenadiazolyl–metal complex, Pt[PhCN 2 Se 2 ][PPh 3 ] 2 . The electronic structures of both compounds are described in comparison with their sulphur analogues and the isoelectronic SN 2 E 2 +˙ radicals (E = S, Se).
