In the presence of excess SnCl 2 or SnBr 2 , 119 Sn NMR spectroscopy shows that the complex anions [Pt(SnCl 3 ) 5 ] 3− or [Pt(SnBr 3 ) 5 ] 3− are exclusively extracted into chloroform containing methyltrioctylammonium chloride or bromide. Significantly, in the presence of even small amounts of chloride ion, halogen scrambling of the [Pt(SnBr 3 ) 5 ] 3− complex anion occurs, resulting in a distribution of the [Pt(SnCl x Br y ) 5 ] 3− species, all possible isomers of which can be observed in this solvent system at room temperature.
