17 O NMR data for some chromanones, chromones, flavanones and flavones are discussed in terms of steric, mesomeric and inductive substituent interactions, intramolecular hydrogen bonding and conformational changes. It is shown that such effects can be used to rationalize 17 O NMR data of compounds with larger and more complicated structures.
