The effect of Eu(fod) 3 on some 12–30‐membered macrocyclic lactones containing various basic sites was investigated in CDCl 3 solution using 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Apparent complexation constants K c , and lanthanide‐induced shifts of the complexes were determined for an assumed 1:1 stoichiometry. In these macrocycles, the participation of the binding sites depends not only on their nature, but also on the ring size and on the conformational behaviour of the macrocycles. On the other hand, the equilibrium constant data clearly indicate that the ring size is the dominating factor in the stability of the Eu(fod) 3 –lactone system.
