Deuterium isotope effects on the 14 N and 15 N nuclear shielding of simple nitrogen‐containing compounds have been investigated. Very similar positive values for 1 ΔN(D) have been observed in a series of amides and amines, excluding ammonium ions. Negative values of the deuterium isotope effect over three bonds are observed in acetonitrile and acetanilide. Both coaxial tube and single tube methods have been used, and show comparable results. The additivity of isotope effects over one bond is found to hold for ammonium compounds and amides. Solvent effects were investigated and are shown to be important. The origin of the solvent effects is ascribed to hydrogen bonding.
