The paper discusses the analysis of recurrent events such as violent incidents in psychiatric hospitals. Many methods used to analyse such data fail to take account of length of follow‐up, individual differences between patients and correlations between events linked to the same patient. Random effects Poisson models and other methods that may be used to address these issues are described. All proposed methods are illustrated by applying them to a previously published dataset.
