There are two principle topics of this article. The first is the development of a numerical technique to compute the field patterns within a longitudinally invariant rectangular waveguide filled with a chiral material. The finite‐difference method is used because of the complex nature of the solution to the chiral rectangular waveguide. Based on these field plots, a simple approximate series solution for the dominant mode is proposed for these guided‐wave structures and verification comparisons are made. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
