Multisection electrodes are proposed with the same interaction length but different transmission lengths from a microwave input to the interaction sections, so that the proper microwave transmission delay can provide exactly the same polarity of microwave voltage for each section. Therefore, the electro‐optically induced phase shift in each of the electrode sections can always add in phase, and several sections can be used to reduce the required drive voltage at the design frequency. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
