A formula is derived from first principles, which enables the shape of the varactor tuning curve to be predicted for a waveguide‐cavity Gunn‐diode oscillator. Only three parameters for the varactor / oscillator structure are required to compute the tuning curve throughout the desired operating region. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
