Analyses and detailed simulations of the bandwidth performance of a metal‐semiconductor‐metal photodetector (MSM‐PD) array were carried out. Based on a simple model of an array with two MSM‐PDs, analytical expressions were derived to calculate the transfer function of the array, from which the 3‐dB bandwidth of the MSM‐PD is determined. The extrinsic responses of the 1 × 8 MSM‐PD array were examined by introducing packaging elements. It is shown that the use of bonding wires with appropriate length results in an improvement of the 3‐dB bandwidth compared to that of the intrinsic MSM‐PD array. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
