In this article we describe an application of the finite‐difference‐time‐domain (FDTD) method to the problems of the cavity resonator measurement of material permittivity and a quantitative estimation of errors in such measurements via the use of perturbation methods. It is shown in this article that the error in the permittivity estimation increases with an increase of the size of dielectric material and that it has a positive correlation with the material permittivity. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
