A loss‐calculation approach that takes into account the exact field behavior near the rectangular edge has been developed for rectangular‐groove waveguides. A new type of groove waveguide with a rectangle‐shaped groove and central symmetry is discussed. A new algorithm for optimizing the losses and overall dimensions of rectangle‐groove guides is described. Sample numerical results for the losses and overall dimensions are presented for a centrally symmetric rectangular‐groove guide and also for a traditional symmetric rectangular‐groove guide. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
