It is shown that although inadvertent weak coherent optical feedback can adversely affect the small‐signal response of a directly modulated semiconductor laser, its effect on large‐signal modulation response can be small. The result is of significance of the response of directly modulated lasers in subcarrier multiplexed systems. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
