The inverse scattering of inhomogeneous biaxial dielectric cylinders is investigated. Assume that an incident wave is incident upon anisotropic cylinders of unknown dielectric constant distribution, and the scattered field is measured outside. By properly processing the scattered field, the dielectric‐constant distribution of the object can be reconstructed. For the theoretical formulation, based on the proper arrangement of the direction and polarization of the incident field, a set of integral equations that can be solved by the moment method and an unrelated illumination method is derived. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the capability of the inverse algorithm. Good reconstruction is obtained even in the presence of additive random noise in measured data. In addition, the effect of noise in the reconstruction result is also investigated. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
