Time‐dependent Beltrami fields are used as the basis of a novel phenomenological theory of the self‐action of electromagnetic pulses in certain nonlinear, isotropic chiral media. A set of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations for slow space‐time amplitudes is obtained. The specific features of some soliton solutions in the chosen chiral medium are described and qualitatively compared with those of soliton solutions in nonlinear, anisotropic, achiral dielectric media. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
