We consider nonlinear distortion due to the optical source and the cross talk produced in optically prefiltered SCM systems. Optimum values for the optical modulation index are calculated and power penalties due to intermodulation distortion are obtained depending on the number of channels and the laser linewidth. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
