Problems of biaxially anisotropic waveguides with arbitrary cross section are formulated in terms of vector and scalar potentials. By using the tangential vector finite elements, electromagnetic characteristics of propagating modes in the waveguides are obtained without the occurrence of any spurious modes. Numerical results are verified and agreements with other published results are achieved. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
