A numerical technique is presented that makes use of the finite‐element method for the analysis of the scattering from perfectly conducting cylinders with cavity‐backed apertures. The method of solution, based on an application of the equivalence principle, is very flexible and can be easily extended to analyze cases in which the cylinder is inserted into a complex environment. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
