Abstract A figure of merit and an optimization procedure are defined, with the aim being to maximize the output power of erbium‐doped fiber lasers. Two tunable erbium‐doped fiber‐ring lasers are assembled as examples. The calculated results well agree with the experimental data, confirming the validity of the model. © 1995 John Wiley & Sous, Inc.
