Twenty‐picosecond soliton pulses are experimentally generated by an electroabsorption modulator at a 10‐GHz repetition rale. By taking into account the unavoidable background light and the voltage‐dependent chirp parameter, a good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is found. It also appears that the usual time‐bandwidth product specifying such sources must be interpreted with care. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
