A novel technique that is based on a Fourier‐series approach has been proposed to analyze the propagation behavior of solitons in an optical fiber. In the analysis both the fiber loss and the third‐order dispersion have been considered. The results compare well with the commonly used split‐step Fourier method [1]–[3]. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons.
