A new antenna model and a new formula for calculating the resonant frequency of an electrically thick rectangular microstrip patch antenna are presented. The model is based on the use of the Schwarz‐Chritoffel transformation and on a dielectric‐loaded inhomogeneous rectangular cavity. The resonant frequency of the dominant mode is obtained by using a variational method. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
