The power transfer characteristics of an asymmetric nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC), which consists of a nonlinear waveguide with a core of Ken‐like medium and a linear waveguide, are analyzed using the beam propagation method. The numerical results demonstrate that the asymmetric NLDC is useful for constructing an optical power filler. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
