We present the design and output characteristics of a periodic Butterworth‐like blocking filter using the transmitted output intensity of an S‐shaped optical fiber ring resonator with two 2 × 2 fiber couplers. Performance parameters of the periodic Buttenworth‐like blocking filter, including the ripple, the contrast, the bandwidth, and the maximum output intensity, are evaluated, and the design procedures are given. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
