This article presents a full‐wave analysis of probe‐fed spherical annular‐ring microstrip antennas. The formulation of the input impedance is given, and numerical results of the input impedance and the surface current distribution on the annular‐ring patch excited at TM 12 mode are calculated and analyzed. It is found that several other modes are usually excited with the excitation of the TM 12 mode. The corresponding surface current distributions for these degenerate modes are presented and discussed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
