Abstract This Letter deals with the optimum design of shielded dielectric resonators, with a dielectric constant around 24, for millimeter‐wave oscillator stabilization. Extending the Itoh et al. and Kaifez models, an empirical formula is devised that explicitly determines the optimum dielectric resonator dimensions and the shield height for a desired resonant frequency under the maximum achievable unloaded quality factor. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
