The stability of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers with distant external optical feedback is analyzed numerically by using the rate equation model. Results for the different cavity designs are compared. The effects of the nonlinear gain coefficient on RIN and spectral linewidth is investigated. The results can be considered as a guideline to the laser design. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
