The diffraction problem of a dominant surface mode scattering by a finite number of metal strips placed on a surface of a planar dielectric waveguide is considered. The electromotive force technique is utilized, and results concerning the analysis and design of beam antennas with low side‐lobe level at millimeter wavelength are presented. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
