Under study is the phase sensitivity of a Type 1 optical fiber ring resonator with a collinear (planar) 3 × 3 fiber coupler, where the three fibers inside the coupler lie in the same plane. It is found that this fiber ring resonator has one of the highest phase sensitivities among many passive fiber ring and loop resonators with one to two 2 × 2 or 3 × 3 fiber couplers. A comparison between the phase sensitivities of this ring resonator and a ring resonator with a 2 × 2 coupler is also made. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
