Singly and randomly polarized nickel‐indiffused waveguides in lithium niobate were found when fabricated under different diffusion conditions. The randomly polarized waveguides are verified to have the advantages of no outdiffusion guiding layer and low diffusion temperatures. The linear electro‐optic coefficient was found only slightly decreased when checked using a Mach‐Zehnder interferometer. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
