We describe a fringe shape stabilization scheme for a birefringent fiber ring resonator with power exchange between the birefringent axes. It is shown that this type of resonator provides an easy way of deriving an error signal in order to stabilize the fringe shape. The system uses piezoelectric control of the fiber birefringence along a short portion of the loop, which counteracts environmentally induced changes in the fringe shape. The system is suitable for use in sensing and spectrum analysis applications requiring high accuracy and scale factor stability. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
