The spherical annular‐ring microstrip structure with an air gap is studied rigorously by using a full‐wave analysis and a momentmethod calculation. This study includes the analysis of the resonant frequencies and bandwidths of the microstrip structure for antenna applications. Results show that the bandwidth increases due to the existence of an air gap. This increase in bandwidth is also found to be more significant for the annular‐ring patch with smaller inner radius. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
