The cross‐polarization characteristics of a spherical‐circular microstrip patch antenna excited at TM 11 mode by a probe are investigated theoretically. The theoretical treatment is based on a rigorous Green's‐function formulation in the spectral domain. Numerical calculations are performed by using Galerkin's moment method. Numerical results of the cross‐polarization characteristics for different curvature radii of the spherical microstrip antenna are presented and analyzed. It is found that a smaller curvature radius of the spherical microstrip antenna can reduce the cross‐polarized radiation of the circular patch antenna at TM 11 mode, and the cross‐polarization level increases with decreasing curvature radius. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
