We propose that a S‐shaped two‐coupler optical fiber ring resonator be used to realize the periodic Butterworth‐like bandpassing and band‐locking filters. The dependence of the characteristics of the Butterworth‐like filter on major parameters of the fiber and the couplers are studied and presented as graphs. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.
