The analysis of double‐step discontinuity in a rectangular waveguide is presented using a TE x ‐TM x field‐expansion and mode‐matching technique. The procedure keeps the advantages of TE x expansion (fewer modes with respect to TE‐TM) and still holds when TE x fails because of the excitation of the E x field component. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.
