The propagation phenomena of nonlinear guided waves along a nonlinear waveguide bounded by two identical self‐focusing media are studied numerically. Both TE 0 and TE 1 guided waves are investigated. It is indicated that the derivative of the guided‐wave power flow with respect to the guided‐wave effective index can be a criterion for the stability of nonlinear guided waves under consideration. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.
