A method of designing an optical soliton communication system with lumped amplifiers is presented in this article. The design requirements and the design procedure are discussed. An exact bit‐error‐rate expression of the system is derived. Some design examples of the optimal systems are given. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.
