We study the transmission of Gaussian pulses by subcarrier modulation of the laser power and obtain an analytical expression of the detected photocurrent. This result provides insight into the effects of the fiber dispersion on the transmission of AM‐modulated subcarriers. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.
