This article presents a novel architecture of a balanced optical communication link intended to reduce the effect of the transmitter laser RIN on the total noise figure and dynamic range of the link. The degree of noise reduction depends on the balancing of amplitude and phase in the two arms of the link and on the modulation frequency relative to the laser relaxation oscillation frequency. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.
