A variational formulation of self‐impedance and mutual impedance of an electrically short vertical monopole above an infinite ground plane in a substrate is presented in this article. A comparison of self‐impedance with results from a mixed‐potential integral equation formulation and a comparison of mutual impedance with results from the method of moments are given. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
