Analytical solutions for wave propagation in a general inhomogeneous dielectric medium in a cylindrical coordinate system are presented. The solutions are built using series expansions of the Frobenius and Taylor types. The former includes the Bessel functions in a homogeneous medium; the latter seems to be new and allows the construction of a general and fast convergent algorithm for computing the modal characteristics. A simple criterium for hybrid mode classification is also presented. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
