A compact (900 × 100 × 120 mm) acousto‐optical spectrometer (AOS) of 60‐MHz bandwidth and effective resolution of 100 kHz has been designed with a minimum number of components and simplicity as design criteria. The spectrometer allows for integration times of several minutes during source‐on and sky‐off phases. The TeO 2 deflector does not use the usual tangent interaction outside the (110) axis, but a two‐band interaction known as quasitangent that leads to a greater bandwidth. The AOS is being used with the 14‐m antenna at the Centro Astronomico de Yebes facility, providing excellent results. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
