Radiation characteristics of a source inside a two‐layered grounded dielectric structure are presented. The space and surface wave fields generated by the source are obtained by employing the integral transformation technique. The directivity and the radiation efficiency are found to be maximum for certain thicknesses of the dielectric layers. The overall gain differs considerably from the directive gain, due to the surface wave loss. The bandwidth is found to decrease with the increase in the gain of the structure. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
