In this article, the factors of a P and δ P are introduced to describe the effects of all optical field longitudinal nonuniformity on the threshold condition. The rate equation model, including spatial hole burning, is established. The two factors are calculated from the rate and coupled mode equations and analytical expressions of FM responses are derived. FM responses of DFB laser diodes are also analyzed numerically.
