The first homodyne optical receiver for polarization modulated signals is proposed. It is based on the baseband detection of the four quadratures of the electromagnetic field and, from these, the evaluation of the Stokes parameters. The performance is about the same as that of heterodyne ASPSK, so that it seems particularly suitable for high‐bit‐rate systems in FDM environment.
