A transmission system model suitable for analyzing both chromatic dispersion and polarization dispersion effects on any coherent optical transmission systems is proposed. Applying this model, the waveform distortion due to both dispersions is calculated for a coherent PSK signal. The dispersions penalty in a coherent PSK system and in a coherent CPFSK system is compared.
