Based on the negative differential resistance (NDR) in the current‐voltage characteristic of the resonant tunneling device (RTD), various applications have been proposed. Circuit considerations are, in most cases, the limiting factors for high‐frequency applications. Stability criteria for the RTD subharmonically pumped mixer are investigated in this article. Improvements needed for the RTD devices in subharmonically pumped mixer applications are suggested.
