A new variational functional for lossy open and dielectric waveguides has been derived. Based on the functional, a nonstandard variational method in terms of longitudinal fields has been introduced for calculating attenuation due to material losses. The method has been tested on a round step‐index optical fiber possessing various complex refraction index profiles.
